Every year in mid September the Rotary Club of Placencia distributes dictionaries to all Standard III (5th Grade) classes in Placencia, Seine Bight, Independence and Monkey River. Each dictionary is personalized with the student's name. Each student is called up to the front of the class and handed the dictionary.
When we visit each classroom we give a short explanation about what Rotary is and before we leave we make sure each student knows how to use the book.
2016 however is special. In 2015, Thomas Diffendal of the Parkway West Rotary Club (Pittsburgh, PA) agreed to support this project. His youngest son David owns Caribbean Beach Cabanas of Placencia and through the two of them, the partnership was started. Sadly, in July of 2015, Tom passed away. As a memorial to him, the Parkway West Rotary Club with the help of the Diffendal family has elected to take on this project in honor of Tom. This year, the Parkway West Rotary Club will donate the money needed to fund this project and aims to make it an annual memorial to a man that loved kids, and loved learning.
